Salvaged By God

Wise Men Still Do

The story of the wise men continues to offer powerful lessons about true wisdom and authentic faith. Seeking Jesus requires following divine guidance and responding to His call on our lives.

The Nature of Wisdom in Scripture

Throughout the Bible, we see examples of those who demonstrated genuine wisdom through their response to God. Enoch and Noah walked faithfully with God while the world around them rejected Him. Ruth wisely committed herself to following her mother-in-law's God, becoming part of Jesus' ancestral line. Andrew showed wisdom in bringing others to Jesus, while David wisely declared "The Lord is my shepherd." Martha's wisdom appeared in hosting Jesus, while Mary wisely sat learning at His feet. Beyond these examples stood Solomon, considered the wisest man who ever lived.

The Journey of the Magi

The wise men, or Magi, were skilled in philosophy, medicine, religion and natural science. Coming likely from Mesopotamia, they would have had access to Jewish scriptures through the exile community. Major figures like Daniel, who wrote extensively about the coming Messiah, served in prominent positions in Babylon. The prophets Ezekiel and others also recorded Scripture there, meaning these educated men would have known the prophecies.

Their journey required crossing deserts, mountains, and rivers while facing potential bandits - demonstrating their conviction that finding Jesus was worth every hardship. Rather than three individuals, historical evidence suggests a larger caravan that caught King Herod's attention.

The Heart of True Wisdom

Scripture teaches that "unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins" (John 8:24). Proverbs warns that "he who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck, will suddenly be broken beyond healing" (29:1). The fool declares "there is no God" (Psalm 14:1), while the wise recognize their need for salvation.

Gifts that Reveal Christ

The Magi's gifts carried deep significance:

  • Gold acknowledged Jesus as King
  • Frankincense pointed to His role as High Priest
  • Myrrh foretold His sacrificial death

Like Davies who stretched himself between a ladder and window to save sailors from a burning building in 1860s Liverpool, Jesus bridged the gap between God and humanity through His sacrificial death. He spanned what human religious efforts could never reach.

The Mark of Authentic Faith

True encounters with Jesus result in genuine transformation. A prevalent issue in modern Christianity is the tendency to simply add Jesus to existing lifestyles rather than allowing Him to fundamentally change us. Scripture repeatedly urges self-examination regarding authentic salvation (2 Corinthians 13:5, 2 Peter 1:10).

The contrast between the Magi and Jerusalem's religious leaders remains instructive. Despite possessing God's Word, the priests and scribes failed to seek the Messiah themselves. Herod, though informed of Christ's birth, responded with violent opposition rather than worship.

Genuine wisdom manifests in following divine light, believing the gospel, worshiping Jesus, giving sacrificially, and heeding His voice. True transformation comes not through adding religion to our lives, but through allowing Christ to fundamentally change who we are.

Those experiencing spiritual conviction or those who have grown cold in their faith face the same invitation - to come to Jesus in repentance and experience His restoring grace. The Magi's journey reminds us that wisdom still seeks Him, finding in Christ the one worth every sacrifice and worthy of all worship.
