America's Christian Foundation

The fingerprints of God are unmistakably present throughout the history of the United States. From the Capitol Building to the founding documents, evidence of America's Christian heritage is etched in brass and stone across our nation's capital.

Biblical Foundations in Government

Inside the Capitol Building's rotunda, paintings depict significant historical events including the baptism of Pocahontas and pilgrims praying with an open Bible before sailing to the new world. In the House Chambers, 22 marble reliefs of history's greatest lawmakers face toward Moses at the center - the only figure facing forward.

The Declaration of Independence itself affirms three key principles:

  1. The existence of a Creator
  2. All people are created equal
  3. Rights come from God, not government

The Founders' Christian Worldview

Of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, 52 (93%) were professing Christians. Similarly, 95% of the U.S. Constitution's authors were Christians. The Constitution's framers drew primarily from two sources - the King James Bible and Sir William Blackstone's commentaries on English law, which were rooted in Judeo-Christian values.

Dr. Benjamin Rush, America's first Surgeon General, declared: "Christianity is the only true and perfect religion." Such statements were common among founding fathers. Sam Adams wrote "The Rights of the Colonists as Christians" and after the independence vote declared: "We have this day restored the Sovereign to whom alone men ought to be obedient. He reigns in heaven and from the rising to the Setting Sun may His kingdom come."

Patrick Henry stated plainly: "America was not founded by religionists nor on any religion but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ." John Adams affirmed: "Our constitution was designed for a holy and moral people; it is wholly inadequate for any other."

Divine Intervention in the Revolution

The American Revolution's success required apparent divine intervention, as the colonies faced impossible odds against Britain's superior military force. With 11,000 American troops (5,000 being untrained recruits) facing 21,000 experienced British regulars, victory seemed impossible.

A pivotal moment occurred in August 1776 when the Continental Army was trapped against the East River in New York. Though the British could have mounted a final decisive charge, they inexplicably withdrew. The next day, a providential storm prevented British ships from completing the encirclement.

That night, expert oarsmen from Massachusetts executed a silent evacuation across the river. At dawn, as recorded in both American and British diaries, a dense fog appeared, providing cover for the remaining troops. Major Benjamin Tallmadge wrote of this "peculiar intervention of Divine Providence." The fog lifted precisely as the last Americans reached safety, with the British recording in their diary: "The hand of God is against us."

America's Ongoing Purpose

As Noah Webster, father of American education, stated: "Our continued success is dependent upon educating youth of America in the principles of the Christian religion." America became the world's leading source for sharing the Gospel for over 200 years, suggesting divine purpose in the nation's founding and preservation.

Psalm 33:12 declares: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage." This heritage of faith and freedom, purchased at great cost, calls each generation to remember its foundations while staying grounded in Christ rather than human traditions (Colossians 2:8).

This remarkable history reminds us that America's founding was not merely a political rebellion, but a movement seeking to establish God's kingdom through Christ on these shores - a heritage worth preserving for future generations.
