Equipping the Saints: Preparing for What's Ahead

The urgent need to equip and prepare believers for challenging times ahead has never been more critical. During a recent sermon, this truth emerged powerfully: "There's a great need—and it will become greater—for believers who are not afraid to put on the full armor of Jesus Christ and stand firm for such a time as this."

The reality is, when difficult seasons arrive, many will wish they had better prepared, similar to campers lamenting missed activities due to an unexpected storm. Today is the time to write God's Word on our hearts, to proclaim the gospel while we still can, and to strengthen our spiritual foundations. We must enjoy every day of freedom while simultaneously preparing for potential challenges ahead.

Christmas in July: A Cultural Examination

The growing phenomenon of Christmas in July raises interesting questions about cultural celebrations and their spiritual implications. While some embrace it as a refreshing mid-summer break, others see it as potentially diminishing the significance of the actual Christmas season.

The movement appears driven by various factors:

  • Commercial interests seeking additional retail opportunities
  • People seeking psychological relief from summer heat
  • Television networks programming Christmas content during slower summer months
  • Some families using it as an alternative celebration time when weather and travel are more favorable

However, rather than viewing it as a second Christmas, it might be better understood as a cultural echo of the profound truth that draws people to the original celebration—the birth of Christ and the peace, giving, and goodwill that characterize the season.

Right On or Way Off? Three Key Debates

Burning the Rainbow Flag as Hate Speech

WAY OFF! The concept of "hate speech" itself is problematic, as free speech principles must apply consistently regardless of content. Just as burning the American flag is protected speech, so too must be the burning of any flag. True liberty means defending speech rights even when we disagree with the message.

Sunsets vs. Sunrises

RIGHT ON! While both offer stunning displays of God's creation, sunsets generally provide more consistent beauty and accessibility. As one observer noted, "A great sunrise is a 9.8, but a great sunset is a 10.0." The physics may be similar, but sunsets offer a special moment of reflection and peace at day's end, particularly beautiful in places like Iowa's Field of Dreams.

Winter vs. Summer

Mixed verdict with passionate opinions on both sides. Winter advocates praise the beauty of snow, cozy indoor time, and seasonal activities. Summer supporters celebrate outdoor living, longer days, and freedom from winter's restrictions. The debate ultimately comes down to personal preference and regional experience, with those from different climates bringing varied perspectives to the discussion.

These discussions remind us that while personal preferences may vary, what matters most is how we use each season and moment to honor God and serve others, regardless of the weather or cultural celebrations happening around us.
