America's founding was unmistakably shaped by Christian principles and divine intervention, as evidenced by both historical documents and supernatural occurrences during crucial moments of the nation's birth.
The Christian Foundation
The fingerprints of God are evident throughout American history, from the physical structures in Washington D.C. to the writings of the founding fathers. The Capitol building's rotunda features paintings depicting the baptism of Pocahontas and pilgrims praying with an open Bible. In the House Chamber, marble reliefs of history's greatest lawmakers feature Moses as the central figure - the only one facing forward.
The Declaration of Independence itself affirms three fundamental beliefs: the existence of a Creator, human equality, and that rights come from God. The Constitution's framers relied heavily on two primary sources: the Ten Commandments and Sir William Blackstone's commentaries, which were rooted in Judeo-Christian values.
The Founding Fathers' Christian Vision
Contrary to revisionist claims, 93% of the Declaration's signers and 95% of the Constitution's authors were professing Christians. Key figures were explicit about their faith:
- Dr. Benjamin Rush, the first Surgeon General, declared Christianity "the only true and perfect religion"
- Sam Adams wrote "The Rights of the Colonists as Christians" and spoke of restoring sovereignty to God
- Patrick Henry stated America was founded on "the Gospel of Jesus Christ"
- John Adams said the Constitution was "designed for a holy and moral people"
Divine Intervention in America's Founding
The Revolutionary War, by human standards, was an impossible victory. The American forces were severely outmatched:
- 11,000 American troops against 21,000 British regulars
- 5,000 raw recruits with no training
- Britain had the world's finest army and navy
Yet divine intervention manifested dramatically during the Battle of Brooklyn in August 1776. When the Continental Army was trapped with no escape, several miraculous events occurred:
- The British inexplicably failed to mount a final charge
- A northeastern storm prevented British ships from advancing
- Expert oarsmen from Massachusetts provided silent evacuation
- A providential fog provided cover for escape, lifting only after the last Americans were safe
Our Heritage and Response
Colossians 2:8 warns us to "beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." This warning is particularly relevant as revisionist histories attempt to minimize or eliminate Christianity's role in America's founding.
The evidence shows God's hand in establishing this nation - from the Christian principles embedded in our founding documents to the supernatural intervention that secured our independence. As we celebrate our nation's birth, we must remember this heritage and continue upholding these foundational truths that shaped America's beginning.
