The Growing Cost of Authentic Faith
In times of increasing hostility toward Christian faith, the difference between superficial and authentic belief becomes starkly clear. The Biblical account of three men - Phygellus, Hermogenes, and Onesiphorus - provides a powerful illustration of how character reveals itself during persecution.
When Many Desert the Faith
Paul wrote his final letter from a Roman dungeon, reflecting on how "all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes" (2 Timothy 1:15). These men, once leaders in the Asian church, abandoned their faith when faced with persecution under Nero. Rather than stand with Paul, they denied knowing him - likely to save their own lives and status.
The Mark of True Character
Character, not talent or ability, ultimately determines how someone responds in times of testing. As Paul observed, what a person truly is will inevitably shine through:
- A schemer will act crookedly
- A faker will spread heresy
- A coward will bring shame
- A traitor will betray
- An authentic believer will remain faithful
Onesiphorus: A Model of Courageous Faith
In contrast to those who fled, Onesiphorus demonstrated remarkable courage. As a wealthy merchant from Ephesus, he:
- Actively searched for Paul in Rome despite great personal risk
- Repeatedly visited Paul in the notorious Mamertine prison
- Brought food, water, and encouragement to the imprisoned apostle
- Refused to be ashamed of Paul's chains
- Ultimately gave his life for his faith
Paul honored his friend's sacrifice, writing "May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains" (2 Timothy 1:16).
The Cost of Public Faith
Jesus was clear about the price of following Him:
"Whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 10:32)
"Whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His father with the holy angels" (Mark 8:38)
Like the blood of Passover displayed publicly on Hebrew doorposts, authentic faith cannot remain hidden. In times of testing, we must choose whether to stand openly for Christ regardless of consequences.
The Simplicity of Faithful Living
While many focus on complex end-times prophecies, the fundamental call remains simple - to live authentically for Christ regardless of cost. True Christianity isn't about clever theological strategies but about straightforward faithfulness.
In these increasingly hostile times, superficial faith will not suffice. Like Onesiphorus, we need the courage to openly identify with Christ and His people, even when it brings ridicule, rejection or worse. The time for casual Christianity is passing. We must decide whether we will stand firm in authentic faith, regardless of the cost.
The Lord promises to strengthen those who choose this path. As Paul declared, "I know whom I have believed and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day" (2 Timothy 1:12). May we, like Onesiphorus, be found faithful.
